Proverbs 13: 20

“He who walks with wise men will be wise, but the companion of fools will suffer harm.”

When we go to school, we learn through instruction. Different teachers have different teaching styles and techniques. I have a professor right now who teaches by yelling. I’m not sure if he’s just really passionate about supply chain management or he’s utilizing a scare tactic in his teaching.

Very few people would expect us to learn the curriculum without instructors or at least learning resources. In my experience, the best (most effective) learning comes from a combination of different teaching mediums (ie. a textbook + an instructor + good examples of the material).

Multi-medium learning can also be the most effective when it comes to learning to live a good, pure, and Christ-centered life. Enhancements to learning to live well (in addition to prayer) can take many forms: reading scripture, attending church, sharing fellowship with other believers.

One additional way to learn to live as we should, which is often overlooked, is having role models that can guide us by example. This is especially important for couples. The Bible does not set out specific concrete instructions on relationships (besides not committing adultery). There is no commandment that says “This is how to date… ” so finding a couple you admire can be very valuable.

Side note: If you're thinking "that's not true.. the Bible says no sex before marriage and that's a clear rule for dating", read this Does the Bible Actually Forbid Premarital Sex?

Finding a role model is advantageous to your walk with God (or for ensuring a Christ-centered relationship/marriage). If one does not fall into your lap, intentionally seek one out. At the same time, pay back the goodness of your role model by becoming a role model yourself.

“In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.”  Matthew 5:16
